Does Yoga Have Therapeutic Applications?

Yes, the postures may produce physical benefits such as stretching, strengthening, and opening which affect the glands and organs as well as the nervous system. Yoga may regulate and balance the involuntary processes of circulation, respiration, metabolism, digestion and elimination.

Studies of meditation and yoga have demonstrated blood pressure reduction, decreased pain symptoms, lower heart and respiratory rate, decreased cholesterol measurement and other therapeutic changes and benefits. Yoga has been found helpful in such health conditions as fibromyalgia, lower back pain, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, and depression.

Psychological benefits of calming, dealing with stress, overcoming negative attributes such as fear, anger, angst, depression, lack of courage etc. may be obtained. Yoga can produce poise, courage, stability, groundedness, and peace of mind which can then culminate in the spiritual aspect of merging the finite (man) with the infinite.
